Luke.

I'm not sure exactly what you were hoping to accomplish with your latest little stunt, but just so you know- it didn't work. If you want to try something, really want to get your revenge? Then stop lying about it and go ahead. You'll see what I'm capable of first hand.

The economy here, like anything in the City, is difficult to gauge. Since opening my shop, I've had erratic spikes in both directions, highs and lows that make it difficult to budget. I get by just fine because I tend to live simply, and I fix everything I own. But how about the rest of you? Are things pretty steady in your lines of work, whatever they may be? Has anyone had a hard time earning enough for their basic necessities?

Oh, and I'm planning on having a summer sale this weekend. 20% off the cheap stuff, and my nicer timepieces are far more negotiable than usual. I suggest anyone with an eye for fine craftmanship come on by.

I'm sure it does.

How old are you, Road? Or is that an impolite question?

Nothing? Except evade my questions and deliberately lead me astray. I know your game, Luke- I've ran it plenty of times on my own. If you don't think I can see right through you, you're a larger fool than I thought.

I have enough saved for my necessities, but I am having a difficult time finding employment. It's vexing, as it seems new arrivals manage to find jobs quite easily. But I suppose they are more qualified than I am.

From: [identity profile] makes-you-tick.livejournal.com
I don't know about that. From everything I've noticed, skill is not the most important thing to have when job-searching.

But then, I'm not exactly the knowledgeable one on this subject. I've only had one job, and I've done it for fifteen years. If I didn't employ myself, I'd probably have a rough time of it, too.

Have you tried asking about it over the Network?

To be honest, I was pretty bored most of the time. I was glad to get back to my shop.

That's not to say there weren't nice parts, though. The beach is definitely interesting.

Maybe I'll have to try it again sometime- but plan it a little better.

From: [identity profile] makes-you-tick.livejournal.com
That's right. I think a great many people are doing jobs that are very different from what they had been. If I guess correctly, though- I bet most people try to get into at least the same field.

How have you been doing?

Date: 2009-08-05 03:14 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] makes-you-tick.livejournal.com
Experience at job-searching and being able to present yourself to an employer seem to go a lot longer than real skills. Of course, Some skills can be important, depending on the job, but many of them offer training now.

I think you should. That seems to be the best way to go about it, here.

Date: 2009-08-05 03:25 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] makes-you-tick.livejournal.com
True. I thought that maybe if I plan ahead a little further, I could find a few more things to do. But that's not terribly likely, is it?

From: [identity profile] makes-you-tick.livejournal.com
Oh, no. You're not pestering me at all.

I only really remember from my high school days. But supposedly, you're supposed to portray yourself as someone bright, energetic, charming and competent, someone who learns quickly and someone who will do what it takes to get the job done correctly. In practice, I imagine this means reading the employer and noticing which of those aspects are most important to them, and then emphasizing your ability to help out on that point.

Since everyone is so diverse here, you can probably even ask them directly what aspects they're looking for the most. They might be impressed that you're looking that far into it.

Then again, this might be a question to ask the Network, too. Others might have a better idea on how it works here than I do. I just know what I see on the Network.

I was a little worried when I opened the store myself, but it's what I know how to do. It turns out the ticking bothers some people into wanting to know the time fairly consistently. And- well, I have the most accurate timepieces available.

Not to mention they look good.

Oh- timepieces help you keep track of the hours in a day, telling you exactly when it is. Like a sundial, if you're familiar with those.

There are two kinds, clocks and watches. Clocks are the set pieces- they tend to go on tables or are hung on walls. Watches are smaller and carried on your person. The City is actually built upon a giant Clock- I'm still trying to figure out how that one's put together.

So I fix up old watches and clocks, and I build my own. Many watches are used as jewelry or as a fashion accessory, but they're also functional. And they tend to be a good thing to have when you're employed, so you can make sure you're on time for shifts.

[ooc: He's so setting aside a watch to give her, just in case she comes by. ;) ]

Oh, you're very right about that. Plus, you get a little more warning if such firings are on the horizon.

So far, I haven't heard of any economic downturns in the City. But maybe they're just waiting on a curse day for that.

I do a lot more physical therapy and a lot less building and fitting, here. Less dismemberment in general, somehow; and too many other options for fixing bodies. Not that I'm complaining-- it's great for the patients, if slow for business. I help out with things outside my specialty too, more than I used to.

I've been... managing. Same as ever. July was kind of a rough month.

Precisely.

And do you think a curse day like that would work? I mean, the people are already so generous in the City... unless they're cursed to hoard things, I guess. Mmm. Would be interesting, if not particularly pleasant, to see.

I'm okay. Not great, but... what can you do?
