Frozen Memories

I remember this day. These pictures can be very insightful...or misleading. Sometimes embarrassing. If any of you found pictures of me, feel free to ask me about them. I've taken a look at a few myself- too curious for my own good, as usual.

I've been thinking of a career change. Apparently the good ol' watch shop could be bringing me down a little. Anyone have any suggestions? Any job I take on is going to need to be meticulous, with a number of ways to distract my mind. I might just throw myself into research- that's nice and distracting, don't you think? Possibly unsatisfying, unfortunately, considering our current situation. I do still want to teach, but finding students is the hard part, there. I'll just have to see what I can come up with.

Too curious. [It sounds like a statement, but it's a question. Castiel knows a little bit about curiosity and more about the cat. He's also taking a look at lucky photo number seven. He'll get to mentioning it eventually.]

Yes. It generally gets me into trouble. I'm trying to get better about that, but it's a little hard to resist when photos are dropping on my head.

Oh, is that one of my pictures? [ he sounds both curious and vaguely amused - he remembers that very sharply, after all ]

I'm human, but I have special abilities. They can be traced to genetics, so I don't think that qualifies me as a witch. I know the definition changes from world to world, however.

[Castiel fumbles for a bit before getting the device to switch to video and show Sylar the photo he's holding in his hands.]

You've evolved. [Now Castiel sounds less vaguely interested and more actively curious.] That hasn't happened in the world I'm from.

Thank you. That's definitely one of mine.

And yes, I am. It hasn't seemed to have happened in very many worlds, I've noticed. Most people's abilities stem from magic or something otherwise supernatural. Is it something you expected in your world?

It has always been a possibility. The world was made to accommodate change even if it isn't expected so soon. In my world, telekinesis is often derived external power, divine or otherwise.

[ uh oh- he had a feeling Anthony might find an incriminating photo or two of him and they'd have to talk. seems like his intuition might be right. ]

Oh, undoubtedly. The grass is always greener on the other side, right? Although, to be honest, I'm pretty happy with this place.

[come on Sylar... talking's... good. right? Right? Anthony awkwardly puts the photo on a counter and looks around, not really knowing what to do next.]

I've, uhm... I've been around... Decided to, uhm, see how you've been...

[ Sylar stands from his seat towards the back, stepping forward to get a decent look at the picture- even as he gets that shiver caused by Anthony's lie ]

You want to know about a photo? [ and then he sees what it is ]

Oh. I should explain myself. Although- I understand if you want to stop coming by.

[Ah, that whole business of being dead but not gone and not a zombie. Castiel opts to keep silent on that for now.]

Many of them. Granted, I think this one rates fairly low on the hell dimension scale.

[there is silence and no eye contact. nervous Anthony is nervous]

So I have a friend here. A best friend, really. At least I think so. He's name's Thomas. He's a vampire. Not the regular blood sucking kind. God, I know kinds of vampires now... He, uhm, he feeds of lifeforce through, uhm, sex [slight blush there] When I met him he was... uhm... Well he was on house arrest for murder.

[all true]

And even though it's all against what I've been taught since I was a kid... Well in the City I learned that, uhm, the badguys aren't always... the badguys.

[frustrated sigh] I suck at talking... But, uhm... I don't want to stop coming by... So...

I think of it more as a really busy limbo. Might be the best place for me, to be honest. Don't have to hide, don't have to be dragged down by the past, and best of all- I can actually think here.

[ he knew Anthony wouldn't want to leave it at that, it's why he offered. he knows about Thomas, vaguely remembers the incident, and this is encouraging. ]

Then I should explain. [ deep breath ] I'm not the same person that I was in this picture. I showed you my powers, right? Well, I didn't start out with that many. I started off with one, and the scientist studying them couldn't find it.

So I was frustrated and then figured out if I killed someone with an ability, I could take it. My own ability was figuring out how things worked, after all, how they were put together. The showy ability made the scientist very happy, so I...kept doing it.

These two people- they were trying to stop me. I killed one of them shortly after, but he came back- he had the ability to regenerate. He's in the City right now, if you ever want to talk to him.

[ he looks away, through a window ] I had something of a compulsion to collect. It's a side effect of my original ability. It...separates you from everyone else, being able to pull everything apart into components. I didn't realize what I was doing to myself, to everyone else until I had a chance at family. That offer turned out to be fake, but it got me thinking- and I realized I didn't want to be a monster anymore.

So here, I've stopped. Things in the City have helped, too. I still have problems, urges, I get things wrong. But I'm trying. [ and that should count for something, right? ]

I don't have superpowers. Unless you count making a mean cup of coffee. But, uhm... If you ever, you know... Have problems... I need you to remember that.

Ah. One of two- no, three times I've had my throat slit. I got better from that one. Wasn't exactly fun, but at least it's behind me.

[ here is a grateful little smile- he had a feeling Anthony might be this way. ] Well- I found a way to copy someone's power without killing them, so it wouldn't be an issue anyway. But sure, I'll remember.
