Sawdust and wood chippings are spread across the ground, and the smell of wood and fried treats permeates the air. Despite the fact that the midway has been stomped down by hundreds of feet, and despite the bright, shiny lights everywhere, the entire carnival is quiet enough to hear a pin drop. No one is here, not a single child or parent. No one's at the booths or in the trailers. The ferris wheel moves in the distance, empty of passengers.

The way out is hard to discern. All that can really be seen beyond the rides, in the fading light of day, are the shadows of a gray, rolling landscape.

A single jet flies overhead, filling the sky with sound for one short moment.

[ooc: Feel free to have your character wander in and interact. :3

ETA: Okay, so apparently it's a good time for my migraine to resurface. Awesome. I'll be slow but I'll still be replying. Just...slow. >_>; ]

"Not as far as I've ever seen first-hand, sir," says Chris, walking a measured pace behind Sylar, not wanting to get too close again, even if he did just grab his hand and survive. "My Aunt Mabel reckons she saw a ghost once but s'probably just her nerves acting up, me mum says, and we shouldn't pay her any mind cos it'll just encourage her. There's magicians and that but my mate Ray said it's all just slight hands or sommat. They've got it up their sleeves." He thinks about this for a little bit and then adds, "Must have pretty big sleeves, magicians."

"That's too bad," he says, sounding like it really isn't. "Special abilities make everything far more exciting." He raises his hand and blue bolts of electricity pass through his fingers as he stares at them. "Never a dull moment, then."

He seems to remember something then, and he shakes his head at himself. "I'm sorry, I never introduced myself. Name's Gabriel Sylar. Nice to meet you- you are from the City, aren't you?"

"Recently I am," says Chris, "but I used to be from Manchester." Of course this looney can control electricity, anything to make him more frightening. Well, alright, Chris is a little bit interested. "You've got superpowers, then, boss?" Not a hero but...well, Chris doesn't really want to ask if he's a supervillain.

"Yep," Sylar replies. "Telekinesis, lie detection, sound manipulation, alchemy- just to name a few. And intuitive aptitude to bind them all together." It's probably good that Chris stays away from the archetypes. He tends to be sensitive about that.

"Like I said, they make things interesting. Which is partially why I like it when it's quiet, like this. Otherwise, it tends to get ridiculous." They make it to the first booth with various food/candy/undiscernable items, and Sylar slips into it. "So then, what'll you have?" he asks from the other side of the bench.

He's not exactly hungry, but there's a perfect snack for that sort of thing. "Candy floss, please." He's a little worried and fixated on the lie detection. What if he says something that he doesn't know is a lie but it is and Gabriel notices and he gets offended and...alchemises him to death or something? Or worse, telekinesis...that's that mind-reading stuff, yeah? Maybe Gabriel knows what he's thinking right now. He tries to change the subject mentally by changing it out loud.

"D'you live here alone, then, boss?"

Sylar gets the paper cone out and holds it in the bowl. He collects the cotton candy in a very orderly manner, making sure it's evenly distributed. "Yep, I'm alone. Always- except for tonight, of course. Wasn't really expecting a visitor, I have to admit."

He held out the candy for Chris to take. "So what do you want to bet this is a curse day? I can usually pick them out, but this is a little ridiculous."

"Must be a curse," says Chris, taking the cotton candy. "I'm not in the City anymore and I dunno how that happened and I haven't got magic, meself, so it has t'be." He begins to eat it, tearing off sections and putting them into his mouth, his fingers almost instantly becoming incredibly sticky.

"Makes sense to me," Sylar says, choosing to fry an Oreo for his own snack. "I suppose we'll just have to wait it out, then. For someone so jumpy, you seem to adapt fairly well."

He leans onto the counter with an elbow. "Or maybe you're just trying to make sure I don't get violent. But I am getting better about that, you know."

"Um," says Chris, not exactly certain how to respond to this. "S'not you, sir, really. I'm not... I dunno. Always thought there might be some sort of magic so...s'a bit weird but... I dunno, boss." Not the most clear of responses, but it was the best he could think of, on an overdose of fear. "Glad to hear you're better, though?"

"Ah, yes. That does take a little getting used to." Sylar smiles, a bit of sadness in it. "It's been so long for me, it's almost hard to remember what it was like, finding out for the first time."

He fishes the Oreo out of the fryer with telekinesis and rolls it on a napkin, letting it cool a bit. "Anyway, I think you're stuck with me until the end of the day. Good to know we're making the best of it, here. I could turn on more of the rides for you, if you'd like." Okay, so maybe he's being a tad patronizing, but this guy really seems to invite it.

He ate his Oreo in three bites, somehow managing to keep the melted good from getting on his fingers.

"That's alright, boss," says Chris, gathering his nerve. He'd love to try some rides, obviously, but he's paranoid that each ride he goes to will have a different dead body lunging at him. "Think I'll probably just sit down somewhere." He pulls the last piece of cotton candy off of the stick and eats it, licking his fingers afterwards and then holding the tube as if he's not quite sure what to do with it.

"If you're sure," Sylar says, twitching his fingers to the side with the intention of disposing of the tube for Chris. "I've got some graves to dig, and I'm sure you'd probably appreciate some time alone. Oh, and there are sinks a couple tents down, if you want to wash off."

With that, Sylar steps out of the booth and starts walking down the midway. "Holler if you need anything, you hear?" he adds, affecting a bit of a Southern accent for it. He flashes Chris a smile and starts walking off. That might be enough for now.
